This is an extremely deep dive into the Mandelbrot set, to 2^316 (binary). In decimal that's 1E+95, or 1 with 95 zeros after it. The coordinates are identical to a similar deep zoom movie posted to YouTube by user metafis, but my version has higher resolution (648x480), and was rendered with 2x antialiasing (four pixels computed for every output pixel). It also has an improved palette, similar to the one used by the Wikipedia Mandelbrot page. The uncompressed video looks better of course--fractals are close to the worst case for video compression--but H.264 does surprisingly well. The video was rendered using my own fractal software, called Fractice, which supports distributed processing using a client/server architecture. The render took five months, using a cluster of up to 20 dual-core PCs on a LAN, all running the Fractice rendering server. The actual number of servers varied over the five-month period but averaged around 15. Rendering only occurred at night. Fractice is a free, open-source fractal explorer/renderer for XP/Vista. It supports navigation, history thumbnails, previews, antialiasing, deep zoom, printing, posters, palettes, multicore and distributed processing, movie recording, undo/redo, color cycling, and job control. It also has VJ features, such as mixing, mirroring, origin motion, palette tweening, dual-monitor, and MIDI. This is the deepest zoom I have renderd sofar. I first rendered this in 2002. But I recently remade it with nicer colour rendering. It goes very near the the left tip of the Mandebrot Set - so it does no look quite like the ordinary zoom sequences you see. One problem with really deep zooms is to get to some interesting point without hitting "the computational wall". Ie The computation takes "forever". If done on a single computer it would take about 3.5 years on a 1 HGZ Athlon Thunderbird, and on a 2x2HGz Core2Duo about 1 year (assuming 32 bit code). If on the other hand you would do this on 25 MHz 386 sx:es you would have to have 135 of them running continously from 1990 until now. Cost for electricity (assuming 50W / machine) would be close to 1.1 million SEK or 150000 USD with current prices. Well of course you would have plenty of time thinking about optimizations :-) Теги:fractaldeepzoommathematicspcspeedcomparisionnew-agemeditationmandelbrot
This is a rather deep zoom. A bit into it you can also see one of Julia Sets (lookalike i presume) inside the Mandelbrot set. Rendering time for this would be nearly 8000 hours on a 1 GHz Athlon Thunderbird. (But of course, not rendered on a sigle CPU.) Music is Nangilima from the album Nangilima by Doc. Coordinates for anyone to test with their favourite program is: Real: -0.1049366816451579879883700925833001280734371117572419840344588951672691089064778 Imag: 0.9276043254180429357601469594238546238042126160969261398796450536437845581500922 Теги:mandelbrotfractalzoomart
This is one of my first deep-zoom series, calculated back in 2001. Now I just remade the video and added sound for better quality. Max iteration count at the final images are a bit over 2000000. Calculation time now would be about 6800 hours on a 1 GHz Athlon TB. In 2001 it was longer because an earlier version of GNU-MP was used. The programs are written in C using the GNU-MP library for the "deep" parts of the zoom. The output is a series of .jpg or .ppm images. I now use mencoder to make an .avi file and then ffmpeg to add the audio track. The process is as follows: First an "explorer" like program is used to select the zoom-in point, then an other program is used to calculate the images up to that point. For both these programs the calculations can be split on many computers on a network. This is the part that takes the longest time to run. When this is completed an interpolator program calculates all the intermediate images and add color, motion blur etc. The output from this program is the image series then fed to the video encoder.
